Apple is only saying that plugins will stop functioning “in a future macOS release.” But whether that means that they’ll stop working one year from now or five years from now, we don’t know.įrom Apple’s developer site, a list of the things Mail extensions will be able to do: Mail in Monterey gets support for extensions built with MailKit, a new API that will eventually replace the current patchwork of plugins. The Mail app itself is largely unchanged from Big Sur, but that doesn’t mean it needs to stay that way. That means that there’s a quick button next to images you can hit to save them to your Photos library, and messages with multiple images in them now condense the images in a visually appealing way rather than just delivering them one after another. Since Messages is a Catalyst app, its new features are more or less in lockstep with the iOS and iPadOS versions. Tags are automatically listed in the sidebar along with Reminders’ usual organizational tools. If you’re using tags in Notes, Reminders can automatically autocomplete them when you’re typing even if you’ve never used that tag in Reminders before. Like Notes, Reminders in Monterey picks up support for tags.

But for groups of people who are already all-in on the Apple ecosystem and who use the Notes app as a catch-all scratchpad, the rudimentary collaboration features are a fine addition to the app. Sharing notes also shares any tags you’ve made, and you can also people you’ve shared a note with and view edit activity and mentions in the Activity view.

At the bottom of the stack, interest-wise, are tags-a new organizational tool, separate from folders, where you can throw one or more #quick #hashtags on a note and the tag will automatically show up in the app’s sidebar. The tweaks for the Notes app itself are a bit more interesting.

On the Mac, if you’re using the Notes app all the time, it’s a whole lot easier just to keep it open on the desktop, or in full screen, mode where it can be swiped to easily without needing to move your cursor from where it is. You’ll usually be running iPad apps one or two at a time, and the ability to quickly drop text or images from an app into a note without actually having the Notes app open can save time.

But more generally I just don’t think the feature makes as much sense for the Mac as it does on the iPad. That’s just one small annoyance, and it’s not as big a deal if you’re only using a 13-inch laptop with nothing else connected to it. When you’re on a video call in an app with native Monterey support, the camera and mic modes will show up in the Control Center where they can be easily toggled. Other video apps that want to use these video and sound features can do so once their developers have added support. The Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum mic modes-again, fancy names for increasing or decreasing background noise suppression, respectively-are also only available on Apple Silicon or Apple T2 Macs. Switching to Portrait Mode for video-a fancy way for Apple to refer to the same background fuzzing that lots of video apps let you do to obscure whatever’s behind you-only works on an Apple Silicon Mac, for example. There are a few video and audio enhancements too, though most of them require a Mac with an Apple T2 chip or Apple Silicon. A grid view allows for a more predictable way to simultaneously view everyone who’s participating in a call, instead of the shifting-window thing that FaceTime usually does in a group call. To facilitate this, FaceTime can now generate links to calls, much like Zoom or Teams or Google Meet currently does-Apple users will be bounced to the FaceTime app, while everyone else gets the browser-based client.

The main improvement isn’t in Monterey at all, but is rather a browser-based version of FaceTime that people on Windows and Android can join your calls. Nineteen months into a global pandemic, and FaceTime in Monterey is getting some additions to make it a more broadly usable video chat app.
